Not for you if: you already have ducts and just want central AC — a ducted heat pump or straight AC replacement is the simpler call. Also not for you if the only goal is the lowest total price across a whole house — at whole-home scale, ducted systems are still often cheaper per square foot; mini-splits win on zone-by-zone control and no ductwork, not necessarily on total system price. Wall-mounted units are the default — visible, efficient, and the cheapest to install. Ceiling cassettes sit flush for a cleaner look at a labor premium. Slim-duct (concealed) units hide in a soffit or closet and feed a short duct run, the closest look to central air without full ductwork.
One outdoor unit can feed one indoor head (single-zone) or several (multi-zone). Multi-zone costs less per room than separate single-zone systems, but every indoor head shares one compressor — if it fails, every zone loses conditioning at once.
Nearly every mini split sold today uses a variable-speed inverter compressor instead of a fixed on/off cycle — that's what makes them efficient at partial load. Ask what percentage of rated capacity a system can modulate down to, not just its top-line SEER2 number.

Cold-climate-rated (ccASHP) systems cost more than standard models. A quote that looks surprisingly low in a cold-winter market may be pricing equipment that isn't rated for your design temperature — ask directly.
Older homes sometimes need a panel upgrade before a heat pump or larger mini-split system can be added. It's a real line item — ask every contractor to assess your panel before quoting.
Long refrigerant line runs, difficult outdoor-unit placement, or wall types that complicate mounting all add labor — why two similar-looking homes can get different quotes.
Most jurisdictions require a mechanical or electrical permit for this work, and the contractor should pull it. A contractor who suggests skipping the permit is a red flag, not a discount.

A single-zone system is often done in a day. Multi-zone installs typically take two to three days depending on line-set runs and electrical work.
If ductwork already exists and is in decent shape, a ducted system is often the simpler, cheaper install. If it doesn't — or there are rooms ductwork can't reach economically, like a converted garage or an addition — ductless wins. Plenty of homes end up hybrid: ducted for the main living space, one or two mini-split heads for everything else.

The federal 25C tax credit expired at the end of 2025 and does not apply to 2026 installations. State and utility programs are a different matter — many are still active, and some states run their own heat pump tax credit. SEER2 uses a tougher, more realistic test than the old SEER standard, so ratings dropped slightly across the board in 2023 — a SEER2 number isn't directly comparable to an older SEER number on paper.
